Maleny House Photographic Diary

This blog is a photographic diary of the building of our house in Maleny, Queensland, Australia. The architects for the job were Bark Design, the principals being Steve Guthrie and Lindy Atkins and the project co-ordinator was Phil Tillotson. The builder was Nathan Quail of Quail Constructions at Maleny. The project was completed in December 2009. It is simply an extraordinary house that is a pleasure to live in.

Architectural concept

In the words of our Architects "The house is conceived to capture the essence and the magic of its magnificent site. Perched high above the Glass House Mountains, the house takes cues from Japanese sensibilities and Southern Californian mid century modernism . The house provides a contemporary lifestyle with glass, steel and natural timbers, beyond a large gabion wall of local stones. A courtyard provides a place of calm contemplation and reflection within spaces inextricably linked to the landscape with seamless thresholds between inside and outside".

Maleny House Motif explained

1.The four squares are the Hadley's -  Anne, Robert, Nick and Alex.
2. The Coonowrin shape is the Glass House Mountain in the main view.
3. The wave is from the Pacific Ocean which is in our distant view or if you prefer the mark left in the soil or sand of a snake from the aboriginal dreamtime.
4. The two horizontal lines represents the fog that gathers in the valley below the house on cool mornings.
5. The graphic at the bottom of the motif represents water that is gathered in our tanks for drinking and washing.
