This blog is a photographic diary of the building of our house in Maleny, Queensland, Australia. The architects for the job were Bark Design, the principals being Steve Guthrie and Lindy Atkins and the project co-ordinator was Phil Tillotson. The builder was Nathan Quail of Quail Constructions at Maleny. The project was completed in December 2009. It is simply an extraordinary house that is a pleasure to live in.

Mum and Al visit 23rd April 2009
Nathan our builder stands in the upstairs walkway with large glass windows on each side creating lots of reflected light. As you progress down the walkway there is an opening to the front vestibule area and the front door and stairways to the lower level. Further on the stairs will rise up to the boys rooms and the media room space. The photo below Nathan is taken from our upstairs bedroom looking out over the void and towards the hills and farms to the East in the direction of Caloundra

The southern side of the house will be in colorbond steel - "corrugated iron" as we called it when in the 1950's and 1960's we used this roofing on chicken sheds not houses!! On hot days folding doors can be opened on both sides of the walkway from the courtyard to reveal a southern balcony and the view to the mountains.

We look forward to the huge timber sliding doors taking there place in the living area - I guess that will be in the coming weeks

Our very special window - the panels slide back and forwards to reveal a flexible view to the dining area and beyond - something a little different!!
This window is designed to highlight the fact that it is often more interesting to conceal a view rather than reveal it to all

Special Window for dining room area.
This is a window you will not see in many houses in Maleny!! The wooden sliders in the frame can be moved to close off the view from the courtyard to the dining room or vice versa - a talking point for many years to come!!
